Natural Resources Wales to hold review into Storm Bert flooding

by · Wales Online

Natural Resources Wales is to hold a review into the flooding that hit Pontypridd and several other towns and communities in south Wales. There remain 60 flood warnings and alerts in place in Wales on Monday morning. See the latest updates here.

The leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf council, Andrew Morgan, has estimated that flooding directly affected some 200-300 properties, both residential and commercial. He said the cost of the clean up would be in the millions. The town's open air lido swimming pool was among the places hit.

Head of operations for Natural Resources Wales Sian Williams said: "There are things that have been improved upon obviously. These are the things we need to look at again to see. Were there defences that were overwhelmed? Are there things that didn't work as well as they could have done? Are there places where there were no defences that flooded?

"Obviously in severe weather we can't protect against absolutely everything and that's something we need to think about as well"

First Minister Eluned Morgan described the impact of Storm Bert as "absolutely devastating". She said that "hundreds of millions of pounds have been put into flood defences in Wales over the past few years". Talks are underway for possible emergency funding.

There has also been criticism of the Met Office for not giving people more warning.
