Bus driver who rammed into minister's convoy arrested in Luwero

by · The Observer

The driver of a Nile Coach bus suspected of ramming into a convoy carrying the state minister for Foreign Affairs, John Mulimba, and three senior army officers has been arrested.

The incident occurred on Friday at Namunsala village, Nakasongola district, along the Kampala-Gulu highway, involving at least six vehicles.

Twaha Onzima, the bus driver (registration number UAQ 602W), was intercepted in Luwero district en route to Kampala. The convoy included Lt Gen Andrew Gutti (former chairman of the General Court Martial), Lt Gen Nakibus Lakara, and Brig Gen Ssekiranda Mwanje (chief of staff of the reserve force).

According to Savannah Regional police spokesperson Sam Twineamazima, Onzima attempted to overtake a truck (registration number UBM 346J), lost control, and struck the oncoming convoy. He first hit the vehicles carrying Gutti and Emmanuel Baira, causing others in the convoy to collide from behind.

After the accident, Onzima reportedly panicked and fled the scene. He was pursued and apprehended in Luwero district, then taken for medical examinations before being detained at Nakasongola Central police station. Onzima faces charges of reckless driving and overspeeding.

Despite the impact, passengers aboard the bus were unharmed and another Nile Coach bus was dispatched to transport them to Kampala. The military officers involved Gutti, his driver, and an aide, Moses Akashaba were taken to Bombo Military Hospital for medical checkups and later discharged in good health.

Minister Mulimba and the other officials resumed their journey after additional vehicles were provided by the police and Nakasongola Military Barracks for their evacuation. The damaged vehicles were towed to Kakooge police station for inspection and further investigation.

Twineamazima described the accident as a "minor incident" despite its high-profile nature.
