UPDF soldier shoots self dead after failing to kill girlfriend
by URN · The ObserverA Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier Pte David Wabule committed suicide after failing to kill his concubine Lucky Auma and her lover.
According to preliminary reports, Wabule who was attached to the 45 Infantry Battalion had travelled to Kaabong town from Longoromit Battalion headquarters with his colleague, Pte Gerald Ngabirano Akampulira on Sunday, September 29.
Later, Wabule found Akampulira with Auma at Korimong Guesthouse where she works as the guest house attendant, leading to a quarrel between the two colleagues.
During the altercation, Wabule reportedly forcibly took Akampulira's mobile phone before returning to the detachment, where he returned to the guesthouse armed with an AK-47 rifle loaded with 120 rounds of ammunition.
He then began firing indiscriminately at various rooms in the hope of hitting Auma and Akampulira. Wabule missed his intended targets before turning the weapon on himself.
Maj Isaac Oware, spokesperson for the 3rd Division, confirmed that investigators visited the crime scene, where they recovered the rifle (UPDF 566007728), 86 live rounds, and 34 spent cartridges for ballistic examination.
"We regret such an incident of misconduct as the joint investigation takes the right direction," Oware stated.
Kaabong district police commander Yudaya Mugoya confirmed that Auma and two other UPDF soldiers are in custody to assist with the investigation.
