Chief Justice speaks out on justice Lydia Mugambe's arrest in UK
by URN · The ObserverUganda’s Chief Justice, Alfonse Owiny-Dollo, is engaging relevant government authorities in the United Kingdom concerning the arrest and charging of Ugandan High court judge Lydia Mugambe.
According to an October 22 report from Thames Valley Police, Mugambe was arrested in connection with an ongoing modern slavery investigation in Oxfordshire.
The report identifies Mugambe, 49, who resides on Lyne Road, Kidlington, as having been charged with three serious offences: conspiracy to facilitate a breach of UK immigration law by a non-UK national, arranging or facilitating the travel of another person with the intent to exploit, and requiring a person to perform forced or compulsory labour.
Mugambe’s trial is scheduled to begin on February 10, 2025, at Oxford Crown Court, with proceedings expected to last three weeks. Reports indicate that she was formally charged on August 7, 2024, following a review by the Crown Prosecution Service.
The charges stem from a modern slavery investigation involving one victim who, according to allegations, was connected to work in the UK by Mugambe. Sources have noted that Mugambe was overseas pursuing further studies at the time of her arrest.
