Planning permission has been granted for a major new cemetery with over 8,000 burial plots off the N7 between Naas and Dublin.

Cape Wrath Hotel Unlimited sought approval from South Dublin County Council for the proposed development on the grounds of the Citywest Hotel and Convention Centre in Saggart.

Plans were lodged for a total of 8,047 "traditional burial plots".

Also in the designs are columbarium walls to accommodate the cremated remains of deceased people.

A proposed reception building is also in the plans and will include an office, kitchenette, a maintenance shed and provision for roof solar panels.

The development will include a new access road to the N7 via the existing Garter’s Lane route.

Also in the plans are 110 car parking spaces with 85 overflow spaces and eight bicycle parking stands.

The planning documents include the reshaping of an existing lake and a new footbridge as well as lighting and signage.

The estimated area of the proposed development is over 13 hectares.
