A Naas District Court judge ordered a man to pay €1,000 for breaking a toilet seat worth €20 in County Kildare.

Judge Desmond Zaidan imposed the fine during a court case which was heard in the court on Thursday, September 19 last.

The court was told that the man had gone into a betting shop in Kildare.

Gardaí said that he got involved in an argument with someone while inside the shop, and proceeded to throw water on someone.

In addition, the court was told that he broke a toilet seat in the toilets of the shop, which caused €20 worth of damage.

The man has three previous convictions, including one for public disorder.

His defending solicitor, Tim Kennelly, explained to Judge Zaidan that his client has mental health issues, and also that he had no recollection of the events which transpired.

Mr Kennelly added: "He was going through a bad bout at the time."

He also said that his client 'is doing better now', that he now has a job in the childcare sector which he said he finds 'therapeutic', and wished to apologise over the incident.

Commenting on the case, the judge said to Mr Kennelly: "If you're on the receiving end of that, it's not nice."

He ultimately decided to impose a €1,000 fine on the man in relation to the criminal damage offence, and gave the man six months to pay this fine.

The judge also said he took the public disorder offence into consideration as part of his verdict.
