Members of Birmingham's 9Boyz wear a distinctive clothing brand, a court has been told. The Newtown-based gang is thought to be responsible for a triple drive-by shooting aimed at Armed Response rivals at a church wake in Handsworth on February 24 last year.

Prosecutors say Modou Leigh was behind the wheel of a Nissan Qashqai used in the attack at St Mary's Church on Hamstead Road at around 6pm. The 21-year-old, from Victoria Road, Aston, denies three counts of attempted murder.

On Wednesday, October 17, jurors at Birmingham Crown Court heard from 9Boyz 'case worker' Pc Adam McWalter, from West Midlands Police. He confirmed part of his role was identifying members or those at risk of joining the gang and what their intentions were.

Asked what his sources of material were, the constable replied: "I use police intelligence, social media and also use what is seen in front of me out in the community."

PC McWalter told the court that people would show 'affiliation' to the 9Boyz with hand signals showing the number nine or upturned into a six, with their main territory being the B19 and B6 postcodes of Newtown and Aston. He said conversely they would 'show threat to opposing gangs' by making a gun symbol pointed at their other hand making an 'A', for Armed Response, or the numbers 16 and 18, representing the rival gang's B16 and B18 territories.

Asked how the gang showed affiliation with clothing PC McWalter said: "The 9Boyz show affiliation, first by a bandana colour. A number of gangs through Birmingham have colours they are affiliated with and within Aston and Newtown that's the colour blue.

"Quite often we see members of the 9Boyz carrying or wearing a blue bandana. We also see a branded item which comes in various clothing items; caps, tracksuits, T-shirts branded in 'Gogetta'."

He confirmed one of the ways in which rival gangs showed 'disrespect' was by destroying items of the branded clothing, adding: "There was a music video released by an opposing gang for the 9Boyz. Through that video they burned a Gogetta cap."

The court also heard a park in the gang's territory had graffiti on the wall which said 'Gogetta no days off 247 365'. The jury has previously been told that Meshaq Berryman, also known as 'Sav or Savo', has been convicted of being the drive-by shooter at the wake attack.

PC McWalter described him as a 'member' of the 9Boyz. The court was shown 9Boyz drill music videos featuring Leigh, also known as 'Lex' or 'M Loose', making gun signals with his hands in the background. The prosecution also presented a photograph from Leigh's phone showing him making a gun symbol next to the number 18 - for B18 - while standing next to Berryman.

In further images shown Leigh was said to be making '6' and '9' symbols, allegedly showing affiliation to the B6 and B19 post codes. PC McWalter said: "Based on everything we have seen in that I would say he (Leigh) is a member of the 9Boyz USG (Urban street gang)."

The wake at St. Mary's Church had been held for teenager Akeem Bailey who had been stabbed to death a few months earlier. The prosecution has told the court they do not believe he was an Armed Response member himself but his older brother and others at the ceremony were.
