Police update after 'fireworks war' next to Birmingham student accommodation

West Midlands Police probing a 'firework war' next to Birmingham student accommodation have issued an update. It follows disorder where groups launched fireworks in the street and from buildings in the city centre.

Some fireworks were aimed towards police officers and vehicles in and around Bagot Street and Staniforth Street over several days at the end of last month. A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder, fireworks offences and assaulting an officer. While an 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, violent disorder and fireworks offences.

Police have since confirmed that the teens were bailed pending further police inquiries. Police are also checking CCTV after a yob wearing a black Darth Vader cape used a 'firework gun' in the street in shocking social media footage.

A police spokesman told BirminghamLive: "We are continuing our investigation into the disorder in Birmingham city centre, where groups launched fireworks in the street and from buildings. Some aimed fireworks towards police officers and vehicles.

"Two teens were arrested in connection with the disorder, and have been bailed while we continue to investigate. We are aware of videos shared on social media, and we are reviewing footage including CCTV footage.

"We won't tolerate such appalling behaviour which we know is frightening for people and puts them at risk of harm. We will seek to prosecute anyone involved. If you see any suspicious activity where you live please contact us via Live Chat or call 101.
