Birmingham driver rams car into police before officers make huge discovery and say 'lucky'

Three police officers were injured and four vehicles damaged, when a VW Scirocco driver attempted to flee police by ramming into them in Montpellier Street in Highgate

A driver has been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences after police officers were injured and several vehicles rammed in a Birmingham street. The incident took place in Montpellier Street, Highgate, south of the city centre, at around 9.30am on Saturday (October 5).

West Midlands Police’s youth violence and knife crime team, Project Guardian, were patrolling the area when they spotted a man acting suspiciously in a VW Scirocco. The driver in his 40s failed to stop for officers and tried to get away.

He rammed three police vehicles and a parked car before being arrested. Three police officers were hurt, with one requiring treatment at hospital.

The vehicle was searched and tools and a number of sets of number plates were found in the Scirocco – believed to be used for burglaries. A bladed article was also found.

The Project Guardian team Tweeted: “Team 1 GTF have just been involved in a vehicle failing to stop. “After numerous attempts to get away and ramming three police vehicle driver was arrested. Lucky no serious injuries to any officers.”

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “We’ve arrested a man after our officers were rammed by a car in Birmingham today. Officers out on patrol tried to speak to a man acting suspiciously in a VW Scirocco on Montpellier Street, Highgate, at around 9.30am.

“The man tried to drive off, ramming three police vehicles and a parked car before being arrested. Three officers were injured. One was taken to hospital but has now been released, while the other two suffered more minor injuries."

The statement continued: “Tools and a number of sets of number plates were found in the Scirocco. A man aged 40 has now been arrested on suspicion of attempted wounding of police officers, going equipped to steal, criminal damage to four vehicles and aggravated vehicle taking.

“He’s also been held on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, drug-driving and possession of a bladed article. The officers involved were on patrol from Project Guardian, which is our dedicated taskforce to tackle serious youth violence.”
