British Gas, Octopus, Eon, EDF and OVO customers to get money for bleeding their radiators

by · Birmingham Live

Households have been told they can cut their energy bills by doing one simple thing in the home. Many people forget to bleed their radiators when cold weather arrives, or don't even know how to do it at all.

Radiators which are not bled may not be letting out as much heat at they could, meaning it takes longer for them to warm up rooms, costing more money. Quickly bleeding them should remove this problem.

An easy way to tell if radiators need bleeding is if they are colder than expected in places when turned on. UK households, including those with the likes of British Gas, Octopus and Eon, have been urged to check and ensure they are not spending more money than they need to.

The warning has taken on added importance after it was confirmed in the last few days gas and electricity costs would be rising yet again from January. Stephen Hankinson, an energy efficiency expert at Electric Radiators Direct, said: "Bleeding radiators helps make your home warmer and lowers energy bills by removing air pockets that reduce radiator pressure, so you don't have to increase the heating.

“Bleeding your radiators at least once a year, ideally before turning your heating back on, ensures they work efficiently. The best part is, it’s quick and easy to do yourself, potentially saving up to £100 on hiring a plumber."
