Sixteen DWP benefits that qualify for council tax bill reduction including Universal Credit and pension credit have been revealed. There are 16 DWP benefits that will get people a reduced council tax bill amid the ongoing Cost of Living crisis.

If you're based in England or Scotland, you must contact your local authority for a claim form to register for a council tax discount. Those claiming the following benefits are likely to be eligible for money off their bill: Income support, Employment and support allowance (ESA), Jobseeker's allowance, Pension credit - guaranteed credit and Universal Credit.

Other reasons you may be owed a reduced or discounted bill include Universal Credit with limited capability for work or work related activity, Employment support allowance (ESA), Attendance allowance, Standard or enhanced rate of the daily living component of personal independence payment (PIP), middle or higher rate care component of disability living allowance, Armed forces independence payment and the disability element in working tax credit.

Incapacity benefit, severe disablement allowance, an increase in disablement pension for constant attendance, unemployability supplement and constant attendance allowance paid from industrial injuries scheme are also reasons.

Other reasons may be unemployability allowance paid from war pension schemes or Income Support, including a disability premium due to incapacity for work. If you have a severe mental impairment and either you live by yourself or all the other adults living with you have a severe mental impairment or are full-time students, birmingham-city-council>Birmingham City Council says you can get a 100% discount on your Council Tax.

The local authority states: "Once you submit your application, we will review it and then contact you to let you know if you have been awarded the discount or exemption. This may take around 10 working days." For some, though, the discount would be the same as you moving to a Council Tax band that is 1 level below what you are currently in. For example, if you are currently in Band C, with the discount you will move to Band B.

If you are in Band A, which is the lowest band, your discount will be equal to one ninth of the total Council Tax amount for Band D.
