British Gas, OVO, EDF, EON, Octopus customers being handed £415 boost in bank account

British Gas, OVO, EDF, EON and Octopus customers have been handed money off their energy bills - thanks to a string of cash-saving tips, tricks and hacks. The energy price cap set by Ofgem has risen to a staggering £1717 for October to January next year.

But the Energy Saving Trust has said that on average by implementing these minor tweaks, households across the UK could save an incredible £415 on their energy bills. They urge households to you consider exactly how much water you need when you're boiling the kettle for your next cup of tea or coffee.

You could save £13 off your energy bills by only boiling what you are going to use. And having showers that only last four minutes could save you £95 annually, while shopping one bath for a short shower instead each week could save yourself an average of £20.

The National Grid recommends also turning down the heat on your combi-boiler. "Turning down the flow temperature on your combi boiler to 60°C or below can knock £££s off your heating bill each year and reduce energy waste from your home," it says.

"If 10 million households turned down the flow temperature on their combi boilers to 60°C or below it could wipe £1 billion off UK energy bills and save 1.7 million tonnes of carbon emissions – the equivalent of nearly six million transatlantic flights."

Turning off "vampire devices" can save £70 a year, they add, while swapping to a 30-degree wash cycle, swapping lightbulbs for LEDs and using heated airers or clothing racks instead of tumble dryers have also been earmarked as the potential for major savings.

They say using clothes horses instead of the dryer could save you up to £70 annually and say you can also slash another £17 each year by opting to run your dishwasher one fewer time each week.
