A key route in Birmingham has been closed after a serious crash involving a car and a cyclist. The incident took place at the junction of Clapgate Lane and Woodgate Lane in Bartley Green shortly before 3pm on Wednesday (October 9).

A car is said to have collided with a cyclist in his 60s who was ‘seriously injured’. He was treated at the scene and then taken by ambulance to hospital.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to reports of a collision between a car and a cyclist on Woodgate Lane at 2.56pm. One ambulance and a MERIT (Medical Emergency Response Intervention Team) trauma doctor with a critical care paramedic were sent to the scene.

“On arrival we discovered one patient, a man who was the cyclist. He was treated for serious injuries before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.

The crash has led to road closures and bus diversions. A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: “We currently have road closures in place following a collision on Clapgate Lane, Birmingham. We are dealing with a collision involving a car and a cyclist.

“A man in his 60s has been taken to hospital with serious injuries. There are road closures in place on Clapgate Lane near to the junctions of Woodgate Lane, Wood Lane and Adams Hill. Please seek alternate routes.” The driver is said to have stopped at the scene.

A National Express West Midlands spokesperson posted on X and said: “Service Disruption. Due to an incident on Clapgate Lane, Quinton. Service 23 will be diverting via: Adams Hill and Jiggins Lane Apologies for any disruption to your journey.”
