Dashcam footage has captured the harrowing moment a massive HGV tumbled 60ft from a rain-drenched motorway bridge.

The clip shows the terrifying incident where the lorry broke through the Armco barriers on the M6 by Warrington, Cheshire, and fell onto the land below last Monday (30/9).

The 56 year old driver of the vehicle was immediately taken to hospital following the accident, which occurred between junctions 20 and 21 of the Thelwall Viaduct at around 6.50pm amid adverse weather conditions.

Astonishingly, the driver sustained no life-threatening injuries and is expected to be released soon. Images from the next day display the destroyed articulated lorry and the extent of the fall that the fortunate driver incredibly survived.

Cheshire Police have confirmed that they are still looking into the crash that resulted in the HGV leaving the carriageway, although previous road closures have been lifted.

Inspector Anton Sullivan of the force commented: "It is remarkable that the driver of the HGV was not more seriously injured, and other road users managed to escape unscathed."

He added: "This incident had a rapid response and the scene was well managed by officers in dangerous motorway conditions, due to poor visibility and heavy rain."

Inspector Sullivan also noted that the recovery operation was complicated by the inclement weather and the difficult landscape where the lorry ended up.

"Police, along with Highways and the specialist recovery agents, have been working all day to recover the vehicle and trailer which were completely destroyed and to repair the damaged railing on top of Thelwall Viaduct, focussing on ensuring safety and a return to normal on the M6 as soon as possible."
