Edgbaston shooting victim named as family pays tribute to 'beloved dad'

The victim of a fatal shooting in Birmingham, which is being investigated by police as a murder, has been named by police, alongside a family tribute. West Midlands Police has confirmed the man who died in the shooting in Rotton Park Road, at the junction of City Road, in Edgbaston, on Friday (November 22) was Raad Asmael.

The 27-year-old was found injured inside a car following the firearms incident, which took place shortly before 11pm. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The family of Raad has released a statement which said: “Indeed, we belong to Allah and indeed to him we shall return. Our beloved husband, son, father and brother.”

A second man injured in the incident, who was in his 30s and found at a bus stop, remains in hospital and is said to be in a stable condition. Another man in his 30s who had been arrested on suspicion of murder nearby in Waterloo Road shortly before 12.30am on Saturday (November 23) has been ‘released from the investigation’.

Detective Chief Inspector Laura Harrison, from West Midlands Poice’s Homicide team, said: “Our thoughts are with Raad’s family at this incredibly difficult time and we are doing everything we can to understand exactly what happened.

“The shooting took place near the busy junction with City Road and it may be that you have information which can help our investigation progress. If so, please get in touch urgently.”

West Midlands Police said it continues to investigate the shooting and is appealing for more witnesses to come forward. In a statement, a force spokesperson said: “A young man who was shot dead in Birmingham on Friday (November 22) night has been named.

“Raad Asmael was found injured inside a car on Rotton Park Road at the junction of City Road in Edgbaston. The 27-year-old was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. A second man who was found injured at a bus stop was taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition."

The statement continued: “We’re continuing to appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time or may have dashcam footage or mobile phone footage from the area at the time to contact us.
