Such was the force of the impact, the brands of the cars were not identifiable, but the first vehicle looked like a lower five-seater car and the second looked like a people carrier. The first car left one set of traffic lights lopsided as a result of the crash.

One resident posted a picture of the scene on 'The Stirchley Page' on Facebook. Posting a picture of the junction with two cars to the page's 20,000 followers, the resident described the scene as a "massive crash."

Adding: "Police have said whole area closed till midnight so avoid if you can." Pictures shared by the resident showed both vehicles were left at the junction in a severely damaged state.

The junction was sealed off for a short period while 999 crews attended. In the picture, the road surface could be seen to be slippery and wet. Live traffic systems showed on Tuesday morning that the road had reopened.
