West Midlands Police issue warning to drivers after seizing vehicles

by · Birmingham Live

A direct warning has been issued to drivers after multiple vehicles were seized for a "variety of offences" in a West Midlands town. While out on patrol this week, West Midlands Police recovered vehicles that were stolen, suspected to have been involved in crime and without tax.

Pictures shared by the force showed a van taken away on a low-loader and a white transit van being stopped. Officers said they were "acting on intelligence" as part of their patrols, which also resulted in a "significant" amount of drugs being seized.

The force also issued a warning to all drivers in Sandwell, saying that relay theft is on the rise across the borough. Relay theft, also known as keyless theft, sees car thieves use a device to trick a car into thinking its key fob is nearby.

Brumwish 2024 - buy a gift for a child in need

BrumWish 2024 is Birmingham Live's festive drive to get thousands of gifts to children and young people across our city - among them the homeless, the vulnerable, kids in care, kids who are poorly or struggling, and kids who have little.

There are THREE simple ways to help.

  1. Buy a new gift from the Brumwish 2024 Amazon giftlist. In just a click your donation will be whizzing its way to our volunteers at Edgbaston Stadium.
  2. Donate money to the appeal fund hosted by Thrive Together Birmingham - this will help pay for gifts for kids with specialist needs or specific wishes.
  3. Buy a gift and, even better, rope in friends, neighbours and workmates to do the same, then drop off your pressies at Edgbaston Stadium, Edgbaston Road, B5 7QU on Friday 6th December, 10am - 3pm; Saturday 7th December, 10am - 1pm; or Monday 9th December, 10am - 1pm. Volunteers will be there to help you. Please don't wrap your gifts. You can also drop off by arrangement until Monday 16th December - contact Louise on 07469 979286.

Thanks to our partnership with #Toys4Birmingham, every single gift will find a good home in the loving care of a child living in B&Bs or hotels, hostels or refuges, children receiving support from specialist organisations and charities, and families being supported by children's centres and charities around the city.

Making up the Brumwish and Toys4Birmingham gang are Thrive Together Birmingham, Birmingham Playcare Network, Warwickshire Cricket Foundation (the charitable arm of Warwickshire County Cricket Club), Birmingham Forward Steps and BirminghamLive/Birmingham Mail.

Thank you to Amazon UK and the amazing team at the Sutton Coldfield depot for their support.

This means the car can be unlocked and its engine started. A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "This week officers in Sandwell have been recovering and seizing vehicles for a variety of offences.

"Wednesbury Town officers have recovered a stolen vehicle. Acting on intelligence, officers also conducted a search on an address in Wednesbury town centre and found a significant quantity of class A drugs.

"Oldbury police officers have seized a vehicle for no tax and seized a vehicle which is suspected to have been involved in the theft of power tools.

"Relay theft is on the rise in Sandwell. Thieves can intercept your car key’s signal from outside your home and steal your vehicle—even if your doors are locked. Take steps to protect your car."

How to prevent relay theft:
• Use a signal-blocking pouch.
• Reprogram keys for used cars.
• Disable wireless fob signals.
• Add physical locks/immobilizers
• Ask your dealer about security upgrades.

The force spokesperson added: "See someone acting suspiciously around vehicles? Trying door handles or lingering near driveways? Call 999 immediately. Your vigilance can help us combat relay theft!"
