Boy in court charged with knife possession after Shard End arrest

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will appear in court later this month

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with possession of a knife after he was arrested in Birmingham. The teenager was arrested by Project Guardian officers in Berrowside Road, Shard End, on Monday, September 30.

Police said he was later charged with possession of a knife and will appear at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, October 15. Project Guardian specifically deals with knife related crime in Birmingham, Coventry and the Black Country.

In addition to the specialist teams, police said neighbourhood teams carry out specific patrols based around data that indicates hotspots for knife crime. Officers also look at "specific times" that people are likely to be in an area in possession of a knife.

A West Midlands Police spokespersons said: "A teenager has been charged with a knife offence. A 17-year-old boy has been charged after he was arrested on Monday, September 30, in Berrowside Road, Birmingham, by Project Guardian officers.

"He has been charged with possession of a knife, and is set to appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court on October 15. Over the past five years, Project Guardian has expanded to include teams specifically based to proactively deal with knife related crime - from bases in Birmingham, Coventry and the Black Country.

"In addition to the specialist teams, neighbourhood teams carry out specific patrols regularly based around data that indicates hotspots for knife crime and specific times that people are likely to be in the area in possession of a knife."
