Households told date for £200 cost of living payments

by · Birmingham Live

Special cost of living payments are starting to enter bank accounts across the country. People still have time to claim the cash but are being warned to get their applications in quickly amid high demand in the rush for money.

The winter cost of living payments are available through councils. Households need to apply directly to their council for payments.

They're not open to everyone, however. People need to show they are struggling to afford basic essentials like food and energy.

Many successful applicants will likely be claiming some form of benefits but it doesn't have be the case if people can show they are struggling to get by. The Household Support Fund (HSF) is open again in most areas.

It officially runs to the end of March but local authorities have warned their emergency funds may close early if they run out of money. That means people should wait to get their applications in.

Some councils have already started paying out money. Different amounts are being paid out across the country but Birmingham City Council has confirmed it is making £200 payments to those in need.

The Government says: "You may be able to get help with essential costs from your local council. This is sometimes known as ‘the Household Support Fund’. This could help if you’re struggling to afford things like: energy and water bills, food and essential items.

"Your council may also offer food vouchers to families during the school holidays. Funding is aimed at anyone who’s vulnerable or cannot pay for essentials. You do not have to be getting benefits to get help from your local council."
