The Wheel has made a comeback, and a tweak in the rules has got fans all saying the same thing.

Comic Michael McIntyre has been the face of BBC's hit game show The Wheel since its inception in 2020 and has now become a favourite for Saturday night viewing.

The goal for contestants is to maintain control of The Wheel and if they can hold on till the end, they stand a chance of bagging a life-altering sum of money.

They are assisted in answering a series of questions by a team of celebrities who regard themselves as experts in certain areas but one incorrect answer could mean the end of their stint on the show.

For the initial four series though, even if contestants answered incorrectly in the final part, they still had the opportunity to bounce back and win the prize pot, reports the Daily Record.

However, the brains behind The Wheel have altered the rules for season five so if contestants fail to answer correctly in the last round, they are out of the show for good.

McIntyre clarified this on the first episode of the fifth series tonight, Saturday, October 12, on BBC One, to contestant Cath.

She was on the verge of winning £86,000 after seeking help from This Morning chef Clodagh McKenna, who was last on the celebrity leaderboard.

After the quiz show host revealed the category as tennis, he announced: "It's a huge moment. It's to cash out with the most amount possible, £86,000, if you get this question correct. Otherwise, you'll go back down and in this series, you only get one chance to win."

Cath simply said: "I know", and nodded her head. Despite Cath and Clodagh's incorrect answer, fans seemed to embrace the new rule.

On X, previously known as Twitter, a viewer posted: "Yay, they've changed the end so they only get one chance to win... about time."

Another concurred: "They changed a rule for the final. Glad other contestants have the opportunity to win."

A third chimed in: "Oh they've changed the rules then - bit more fair I guess."

However, not everyone was pleased, with a fan remarking: "This rule change on #TheWheel isn't fair to contestants from other series."

Despite the controversy, the episode had a high note as Hala bagged an impressive £21,500 with Jonathan Ross' assistance, correctly answering a Beatles-related question.

The Wheel continues every Saturday on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
