Garden gury Monty Don has imparted his latest wisdom for cultivating a garden that will remain enchanting for years. Writing in his column for BBC Gardeners' World Magazine, Monty divulged that the unique conditions of October present an ideal opportunity for gardeners to plant verdant boundaries.

In his piece, aptly named 'The Full Monty', he said the warm soil of early autumn sets the perfect stage for hedge planting. He noted that at this time, plants are not heavily taxed by their leaves, which promotes robust root development and leads to a vigorous hedge.

Such hedges, Monty pointed out, will not only add structure but also ensure privacy for many years ahead, reports the Express. Monty reassured that hedge planting in autumn is a task that doesn't demand expert gardening prowess, thus it's accessible to all, from the green-fingered aficionado to the budding novice

"So plant hedges. Make them low, tall, straight, and curved. October is the best month because the soil is warm, and the roots will get established with little or no demand from the foliage," Monty advised.

For those looking to achieve great results without breaking the bank, he suggested: "Plant small and not only will it be much cheaper, but it will also establish much quicker."

"Keep the base weed-free and mulched, and let the leaders of each plant reach the desired height before cutting back," he continued, adding that an annual trim, post-bird nesting season, is typically sufficient.

"That's it. Not a lot of room for horticultural expertise or opportunities for displaying your gardening credentials. But decades of pleasure and beauty await you," he said.

Monty then turned his attention to other pivotal autumnal tasks that garden enthusiasts should undertake to ensure their gardens burst into life next year. In an earlier segment of Gardeners' World, he highlighted the critical role of planting spring-flowering bulbs at this time, labelling it the "biggest" and "essential job" in the back end of September and early October.

For successful bulb planting, Monty emphasized the necessity of proper drainage, recommending the use of a container with a sizeable hole at the bottom and side holes as an exemplar method. "Most bulbs are better planted in September if you can get it done," Monty advised.

Further to this, Monty drew attention to the practice of taking cuttings in the autumn period to ensure that the garden remains resplendent throughout the following year. He has long championed the use of semi-ripe cuttings from that year's growth to propagate exact replicas of one's most beloved plants, citing that this approach frequently brings about the most favourable outcomes.
