Experts crown 'best tasting' UK supermarket Christmas range 2024

Good Housekeeping has revealed the best tasting supermarket for Christmas treats and trimmings in 2024 - and surprisingly it's not one of the 'Big Four' retailers

With just ten weeks to go until Christmas, households across the UK are turning their focus towards planning their festive feasts. Numerous supermarkets have launched a plethora of delicious treats and trimmings to help create the perfect Christmas dinner.

Despite a variety of supermarkets unveiling their own Christmas ranges this year to simplify festive meal preparation, only one has been declared the 'best tasting' UK supermarket by Good Housekeeping's annual Christmas Taste Test.

A dedicated team of food experts put each supermarket's range to the ultimate test, with 730 products from 98 brands tested in total to determine, once and for all, which shop had the best offerings for 2024. However, there could only be one victor, with budget-friendly chain Aldi triumphing over competitors such as Tesco, Marks & Spencer and Waitrose, to be named the best tasting Christmas range of 2024.

One of the standout products was the brand's Veuve Monsigny Premier Cru Champagne, which was voted Best Champagne by Good Housekeeping, making it the ideal beverage to kickstart the festive celebrations. The £22 bottle outperformed competitors on both taste and price, with pricier options such as Selfridges £34.99 and MandS's £28 bottles, unable to surpass its bubbly supremacy.

Aldi's mince pies have won the hearts of many, with judges at a panel crowning them top for their "soft, flaky pastry" and "sweet, caramelised fruit filling". A bargain at just 38p each or £2.29 for six, these treats are sure to be a hit, reports the Mirror.

The supermarket's Specially Selected Roly Poly Whole Turkey also impressed, bagging the Best Whole Turkey award due to its "natural sweet flavour" and "umami depth." It is set to be available from 19 December.

A true festive cheese extravaganza, Aldi's Specially Selected Ultimate 5 Year Vintage Cheddar Bake was also applauded as the best vegetarian starter, priced at an affordable £5.99, with availability starting on 6 December.

And for dessert aficionados, Aldi's Specially Selected Orange and Maple Pudding, at only £9.99, scooped the accolade for best flavoured Christmas pudding, though shoppers will need to mark 1 November in their calendars for this one.

Aldi UK's Managing Director of Buying, Julie Ashfield, expressed her joy: "Christmas has come early with the Good Housekeeping Institute awards. From starters to desserts and even the bubbly we've got every course covered with awards, and we are delighted to be named Best Overall Grocer. Shoppers can count on Aldi to make Christmas amazing without breaking the bank."

Aldi isn't just an award winner at Christmas either, with the German-born supermarket chain having been named the cheapest supermarket in the UK by Which?for the 11th consecutive month in a row.
