Lichfield school in ‘lockdown’ after concerns about former student on site

by · Birmingham Live

A school was placed in lockdown after concerns were raised about a youth on the site. It happened at Nether Stowe School in St Chads Road, Lichfield, this morning, Friday, November 22.

BirminghamLive understands some pupils were sent to the back of a classroom, which had its lights off. The school confirmed it had a ‘safeguarding concern’ on Friday.

It said it followed its lockdown procedures after an incident involving a former pupil. The school said it was aware of speculation but confirmed the incident did not involve any weapons or drugs. It said no staff or students were at any risk.

In a post on its social media channels, addressed to parents and carers, deputy headteacher, Mr S Cooper said: “We just want to make you aware that today we had a safeguarding concern which has led to us having to follow our lockdown procedures. At Nether Stowe School, the safety of our students is our utmost concern.

“The situation was dealt with swiftly and has now been resolved. All students are safe and have been reassured that they can see any member of staff if they have any worries.

“This was a safeguarding situation involving one former student, so we hope you appreciate it would be inappropriate for us to share specific details. What we can say is the lockdown lasted for around 30 minutes and that no students or staff were at risk at any point.”

Brumwish 2024 - buy a gift for a child in need

BrumWish 2024 is Birmingham Live's festive drive to get thousands of gifts to children and young people across our city - among them the homeless, the vulnerable, kids in care, kids who are poorly or struggling, and kids who have little.

There are THREE simple ways to help.

  1. Buy a new gift from the Brumwish 2024 Amazon giftlist. In just a click your donation will be whizzing its way to our volunteers at Edgbaston Stadium.
  2. Donate money to the appeal fund hosted by Thrive Together Birmingham - this will help pay for gifts for kids with specialist needs or specific wishes.
  3. Buy a gift and, even better, rope in friends, neighbours and workmates to do the same, then drop off your pressies at Edgbaston Stadium, Edgbaston Road, B5 7QU on Friday 6th December, 10am - 3pm; Saturday 7th December, 10am - 1pm; or Monday 9th December, 10am - 1pm. Volunteers will be there to help you. Please don't wrap your gifts. You can also drop off by arrangement until Monday 16th December - contact Louise on 07469 979286.

Thanks to our partnership with #Toys4Birmingham, every single gift will find a good home in the loving care of a child living in B&Bs or hotels, hostels or refuges, children receiving support from specialist organisations and charities, and families being supported by children's centres and charities around the city.

Making up the Brumwish and Toys4Birmingham gang are Thrive Together Birmingham, Birmingham Playcare Network, Warwickshire Cricket Foundation (the charitable arm of Warwickshire County Cricket Club), Birmingham Forward Steps and BirminghamLive/Birmingham Mail.

Thank you to Amazon UK and the amazing team at the Sutton Coldfield depot for their support.

The statement continued: “We would also like to confirm there were no weapons or drugs involved as we are aware there has been some speculation. We are really pleased the students handled themselves with maturity and are a credit to the school.

“If you have any further questions, please do get in touch through the school office. Thank you for your patience, support and understanding.” Staffordshire Police has been approached for a comment.
