Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payments will be targeted by a Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ) overhaul next year. The DWP plans to revamp of its disability benefits early next year in a bid to cut down on unemployment.

The DWP has stated that a consultation will be published in spring 2025 and reassured claimants that it will "put the views and voices of disabled people at the heart of any policy changes that directly affect them."

Before the Labour Party won the General Election back in July, the Conservative Party government under former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had floated the idea of a PIP shake-up.A green paper published in April mulled over scrapping cash payments for vouchers, a catalogue system, or grants instead.

After being wrapped up a few months ago, the Labour government is said to be considering its next steps regards to PIP. The update comes during the week a brand-new paper was launched, aimed at Getting Britain Working Again, with Jobcentre reforms coming for Universal Credit claimants in 2025.

Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall said: "I will be putting forward our own proposals to reform sickness and disability benefits. This is extremely difficult and I know people really want more detail, but we won't do that until we're absolutely ready and have had the proper discussions with people."

She also reflected on the feedback from PIP claimants, saying: "I was very struck particularly by the comments people made around shifting support to vouchers and where many organisations said their real concern was that it took away people's autonomy and particularly when services are so stretched and tight."

It comes as Sir Stephen Timms continues to field questions about potential PIP changes in the Commons. Labour is also planning a spring 2025 overhaul of health and disability benefits, which includes revamping or replacing the work capability assessment.
