Man charged after sex assault in Birmingham city centre bar toilets

A man has been charged with sexual assault after a woman was attacked in a bar in Birmingham city centre. It follows an incident at almost midnight at an unidentified location on Wednesday, November 13.

West Midlands Police said a woman reported being followed to the toilets by a man who carried out a sex attack. Police said she was able to raise the alarm and a suspect was detained by staff until officers arrived at the scene.

Police said Ian Hayles, 36, of no fixed address, had been charged with sexual assault. He was due to appear at Birmingham Magistrates' Court today, Friday, November 15.

In a statement, police said: "We’ve charged a man with sexual assault after a woman was attacked in a Birmingham city centre bar. The victim had walked into the toilets at around 11.50pm on November 13 when she was followed in by a man who then attacked her.

"She was able to raise the alarm and a suspect was detained by staff until police arrived. The victim is now being supported by officers. Ian Hayles, aged 36, of no fixed address, is accused of sexual assault. He was charged overnight and was appearing before city magistrates today."
