Horrified Birmingham bus passengers discover cockroaches on board as National Express says 'sorry'

The bus firm said the incident on Birmingham's number 11 service was 'rare'

National Express has apologised after horrified passengers came face-to-face with 'cockroaches all over the back seat' of a city bus. The creepy insects, with long antennae, were filmed on the number 11 bus service - also known as the Birmingham Outer Circle route.

Footage of the grim discovery was sent in to Facebook page 'Brumz Updates' and subsequently shared on social media. The caption read: "Cockroaches on the 11 bus this morning, all over the back seat."

National Express told BirminghamLive that its bus fleet are "inspected and cleaned every night at the end of service". The firm said staff carry out "regular deep cleaning" but apologised over the "rare" incident.

Facebook users reacted to the shocking footage online. Nicola Cardall wrote: "Please tell me that isn't real. I hate cockroaches and get the 11 four times daily."

Jo Lea said: "I've complained many times about the buses being filthy but never had a response." Sue Hall said she was "glad" she doesn't use buses.

Andrew Boxall, in a tongue-in-cheek comment, joked: "Hope it’s got a daysaver if it’s going to be on there all day."

Richard Farrell added: "If people didn’t leave their rubbish all over the bus, they wouldn’t be on them. It’s disgusting the state of some of the buses."

A spokesperson for National Express said: "We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience. Our buses are inspected and cleaned every night at the end of service and we conduct regular deep cleaning. Reports such as these are extremely rare and we're committed to providing a safe and clean environment for our passengers and colleagues."
