Birmingham man filmed beating dog in shocking attacks has avoided jail

A Birmingham man filmed beating a dog in shocking attacks has avoided a jail term. Daniel Robertson, from Kingstanding, admitted two animal welfare offences following an investigation and prosecution by the RSPCA.

In one clip, the RSPCA says the dog named 'Reggie' is dragged across the ground then lifted into the air by his collar before he is thrown back onto the floor with force where he is held while being punched by Robertson. In the second clip, filmed a day apart, Robertson is shown chastising Reggie before grabbing him and pinning him to the floor. He is then struck several times as he tries to get away.

A vet who watched the videos said his actions towards Reggie would result in not only physical but also mental distress. In their report the vet added: “Being within an unpredictable environment such as this can have profound negative effects on the psychological wellbeing of both animals and humans.”

RSPCA inspector Ben Jones, who investigated for the animal welfare charity, said: "Robertson inflicted appalling and totally unnecessary violence on Reggie. Animals deserve to be shown kindness and respect. There is never an excuse for treating an animal in this way.” In mitigation, Robertson was said to be sorry for his actions and had been struggling with his mental health.

Robertson was sentenced to eight months custody, which was suspended for 12 months. He was also handed a 15 year animal disqualification order, which he can not appeal to have lifted for eight years and pay a £114 victim surcharge. He was also deprived of ownership of Reggie who was signed over into the care of the RSPCA.
