Pensioners may be forced to pay back hundreds of pounds in winter fuel payments

The winter fuel payment is getting a significant overhaul - meaning many could be forced to pay the cash back if their circumstances change

Changes to the eligibility requirements for winter fuel payments may compel pensioners to return hundreds of pounds they received. The benefit is set to become means-tested after Labour secured the modification in parliament.

The Chancellor pointed out that, under this newly established framework, only individuals receiving certain means-tested benefits will be eligible for the payment. Complications could arise if a recipient's circumstances change post-qualification, rendering them ineligible and possibly indebted to repay the funds, reports the Express.

Not updating the system with address modifications or lapses in claiming qualifying benefits could result in pensioners having to reimburse their winter fuel payments. To avoid losing the allowance, pensioners need to contact the DWP immediately upon any circumstance changes.

Those unsure about their status can maintain correct records by calling the Winter Fuel Payment Centre at 0800 731 0160, or +44 (0)191 218 7777 for residents overseas. Amidst these amendments, Age UK's Director Caroline Abrahams has implored the government to widen the scope of those eligible for the winter fuel payment.

Highlighting the potentially severe repercussions of failure to expand the criteria, she commented, "If [Labour] is dead set on pressing ahead, the very least they should do is to greatly expand the numbers of pensioners who will receive a winter fuel payment beyond the small group they have so far said will retain it.

"Even this would not be enough though because many pensioners on low incomes or in vulnerable circumstances would still miss out on a winter fuel payment when they can ill afford to do so."
