Derby road closed as police respond to 'incident'

People were told to avoid the area on Wednesday night

Police closed a road in Derby as officers responded to an "incident". People were warned to avoid the area around Abbey Street on Wednesday night (October 2).

Derbyshire Police confirmed the road was closed off at just after 8pm. Officers remained at the scene at 10.30pm, with a police cordon in place to prevent access.

The road was closed between the junction with Burton Road and Boyer Street. Police said only that the closure was "due to a police incident" and no further details have been issued at this stage.

At 10.30pm traffic monitoring service Inrix's live traffic map showed delays in the area due to the closure.

Derbyshire Police said in an update issued at 8.04pm: "Abbey Street in Derby is currently closed between the junction with Burton Road and Boyer Street, due to a police incident. Please avoid the area. No further updates are available at this time."
