The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants on Thursday for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister and Hamas officials, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity over their 13-month war in Gaza and the October 2023 attack on Israel respectively.

The court said that there are 'reasonable grounds' to believe Netanyahu and Gallant oversaw attacks on the civilian population in Gaza.

Along with Netanyahu, the ICC has also issued an arrest warrant for his  former defence minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza .

This decision reinforces the ICC's stance on its jurisdiction over the “Situation in Palestine” and its approach to procedural fairness.

“Israel rejects with disgust the absurd and false actions and charges against it by the International Criminal Court, which is a biased and discriminatory political body," Netanyahu stated.

The charges include -- starvation of civilians as a method of warfare, wilfully causing great suffering, or serious injury to body or health, intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population, other inhumane acts as crimes against humanity, among other charges, as per the statement.

The International Criminal Court's (ICC's) arrest warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant, and Deif is "an extremely significant step," Ireland's Taoiseach said.

The International Criminal Court, which Foreign Secretary David Lammy last month said the UK 'supports', today issued warrants for Netanyahu and ex-defence minister Yoav Gallant.

Israel and the US have condemned the arrest warrants as outrageous.

Ordinary Palestinians in Gaza welcome the ICC's announcement, saying they hope it will bring "justice".
