Thousands of Ukrainians and Russians descend on US southern border

by · Washington Examiner

Since before Russia invaded Ukraine, thousands of people from both nations have fled to Mexico in the hope of making it to the United States.

At least 30,000 Russians and 10,000 Ukrainians arrived in Mexico at the start of the year, up from the averages of previous years, according to the Wall Street Journal, citing Mexican immigration officials.

Authorities believe the vast majority of arrivals, who allege they are in Mexico as tourists, intend to make their way to the U.S.

No visa is required for Ukrainian travel to Mexico, and, once at the southern border, they can reach out to U.S. officials for asylum or humanitarian parole.

The U.S. government has announced it would welcome at least 100,000 Ukrainian refugees, and those with families in the country will receive priority.

The Department of Homeland Security further stated that it would ease the process for the incoming Ukrainians coming over the border with Mexico, the report noted.

"We address an individual’s claim for humanitarian relief as they are presented to us," DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said previously.
