THRONE MOXAM believes in the power of hard work and determination. Every day, he is awakened with a fierce determination to better himself and reach new heights. The idea, he said, is that the sky is the limit and this fuels and motivates him to continually strive for his full potential.

“I live by the mantra, ‘Success runs on the tracks of determination’, reminding myself that achieving success requires unwavering perseverance and dedication,” Moxam said.

“I am self-motivated, constantly pushing myself to excel in all aspects of life. Despite any challenges that may come my way, I persevere with resilience and strength, never losing sight of my goals. My humility keeps me grounded, allowing me to stay connected to others and remain open to learning and growth. Moreover, my passion drives me forward, igniting a fire within me to pursue my dreams relentlessly. With unwavering confidence, I inspire those around me to believe in themselves and strive for greatness,” he added.

Moxam hails from the community of Exeter District, Mountain Side, nestled in Jamaica’s bread basket parish, St Elizabeth. Growing up, he said, presented a blend of challenges and blessings within his extended household, including his mother, grandparents, uncles, and aunt that played crucial roles in his upbringing and education from primary school through university.

“Despite my father’s absence during my formative years, I have grown to value the lessons learned and the resilience and determination cultivated in his absence. Life in our tight-knit community was marked by abundant support and encouragement from family members who guided me not only through familial ties, but also through academic pursuits, shaping my character and fostering personal growth,” Moxam said.

“Reflecting on my journey, I appreciate the impact of challenges faced, recognising their role in shaping me into the person I am today. I am particularly indebted to Escoffery Brown for his mentorship during my early teenage years, which significantly influenced my educational pursuits and personal development,” he added.

Teaching science was not always in his plan as a career choice. Initially, he aspired to delve into the world of gaming and animation but “because of a delayed response regarding my application, Brown redirected my focus”. He then applied to The Mico University College to pursue computer science.

“My interest in this area of teaching stemmed from a realisation of the increasing significance of technology in our lives. With thorough consideration, I recognised the pivotal role that computer science plays in shaping various industries, and decided to embark on this path to contribute to the evolving landscape of technology,” Moxam said.

Science as a subject, he said, evokes special feelings of fulfilment and satisfaction, particularly when he witnesses the joy of his students as they solve problems and apply the knowledge they have gained in class.

In my classroom, fostering genuine connections with my students has always been paramount. Through consistent kindness and respect, I have cultivated a rapport where students feel comfortable and valued. This foundation creates an environment where they eagerly engage with the subject matter. My teaching methods, which prioritise interaction and hands-on learning, further ignite their interest. As a result, students not only participate eagerly but also anticipate my classes with enthusiasm,” Moxam said.

Moxam currently teaches information communication technology and Electronic Documentation Preparation Management at the Wolmer’s Boys’ School.

“My degree is in computer science and, within that field, we have branches of different subject areas. Despite the happenstance, I have grown to appreciate and enjoy teaching these subjects immensely. They offer unique opportunities to explore the practical applications of technology and digital documentation, which align well with my expertise and passion for computing,” he said.

Moxam became involved in the BOOST Programme based on a recommendation from the then head of computer science at The Mico University College. Since then, he said, his experience have been nothing short of fantastic.

“The symposium sessions have expanded my network and provided invaluable insights. We have also received incredible support from our mentors, who are always available to address any concerns we may have. The monetary benefits of the programme are exceptional, offering us fellows an opportunity we truly cannot complain about. Overall, being a part of the BOOST Programme has been a great experience, enriching both personally and professionally,” Moxam said.

Moxam said he would highly recommend the BOOST Programme to others, based on the transformative experiences he has had since joining. “The networking opportunities provided through symposium sessions have been invaluable, connecting me with professionals and insights that have enriched my career.

“Overall, the BOOST Programme has not only enhanced my professional development but also enriched my personal growth, making it a programme I wholeheartedly endorse to others seeking similar opportunities for advancement,” he said.
