Mounties say fuel theft is on the rise in Vernon, and urges people to take steps to protect themselves.

Const. Chris Terleski with the Vernon RCMP confirmed cops have seen a recent uptick in the number of thefts of fuel being reported in the last month.

“This includes instances of both fuel being syphoned as well as tanks being drilled and drained, leading to costly repairs,” said Terleksi in an email.

Terlseki said thefts typically occur overnight when vehicles are left unattended for longer periods of time.

Mounties are continuing to investigate and suggest vehicle owners take steps to help deter this type of crime. Steps include, installing a locking gas cap, even if the fuel door locks, parking in a well-lit, high traffic area, or parking your vehicle in a garage if possible.

Terleski is also reminding people to stay alert.

“As always, keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour and if you see it, please report it immediately and directly to police,” said Terleski. “The sooner we get the information, the quicker our response and better chance we have to catch those responsible.”
