Wells, borewells in Tiruppur district to be made compatible for rainwater harvesting

by · The Hindu

A large number of open wells and borewells in rural parts of Tiruppur district are likely to be converted into rainwater harvesting structures, in the wake of the success of a trial run.

Under the pilot initiative, the measures taken before the rainy season to divert run-off water to an open well at Padiyur village in Kangayam Block and at Mallegoundenpalayam village in Palladam Block have delivered the desired results.

The water table had risen considerably, much to the relief of the local bodies for addressing water requirements for drinking and cultivation of crops all through the summer season, official sources said.

The task was carried out under a provision of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

Minister for Information and Publicity M.P. Saminathan, under whose directive the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) carried out the task, inspected the outcome of the pilot initiative at the two locations on Thursday.

Efforts for securing government funds through Public Works Department for broad-basing the works on rainwater harvesting in wells and borewells in rural parts across the district was under way, sources said.

Rainwater harvesting would be carried out in wells and borewells that were in use as well as disuse. Water percolation mechanism for the wells and borewells in use would be put in place after a process of filtration, official sources added.
