Karnataka, a leader in Sustainable Development Goals: Khandre
Karnataka is one of the front runners of the SDG Score index in the country, with a score of 75 for 2023-24, the Environment Minister said.
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduEmphasising that emerging economies like India have the opportunity to adopt cutting-edge solutions for sustainable, inclusive growth that prioritises both environmental and social equity, Minister for Forest, Ecology, and Environment Eshwar Khandre pointed out that Karnataka is one of the front runners of the Sustainable Development Goal Score index in the country with a score of 75 for the current year.
“By investing in human capital and promoting fair policies, we can build a balanced economy. Karnataka is one of the front runners of the SDG Score index in the country, with a score of 75 for 2023-24, thanks to years of collaboration between organisations and government. As a Minister, I aim to instil best practices in environmental conservation and tackle climate change, ensuring sustainable development for future generations,” Mr. Khandre said while speaking at the second edition of the ESG Summit organised by CII Karnataka.
In NITI Aayog’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) India Index for 2023-24, the State achieved fifth place, with its score going up from 72 in 2020-21.
White paper released
A White Paper on ESG approaches for MSMEs, prepared by the CII Green Business Centre, was released during the event.
It outlined strategies such as implementing energy-efficient equipment, adopting 3Rs, rainwater harvesting, green products purchase, employee welfare, renewable energy, sustainable policy enhancements, air quality monitoring and so on to enhance sustainability practices within MSMEs.
“While MSMEs may face challenges due to limited resources, the adoption of ESG practices offers significant opportunities for growth, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability. By integrating ESG into their business models, MSMEs can enhance their reputation, improve resource management, and meet the growing demand for responsible business practices from consumers, regulators, and supply chains. This adoption is not only beneficial for environmental and social impact but can also create new business opportunities and unlock access to sustainable financing,” the report read.
N. Venu, Chairman, CII Karnataka State Council 2024-25 & MD & CEO - India & South Asia, Hitachi Energy, noted that India has set ambitious energy targets, both as intermediate milestones and long-term goals.
“Achieving these objectives requires the concerted efforts of all stakeholders, and the MSME sector plays a pivotal role in accelerating the country’s energy transition, particularly through the adoption of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices within their organizations,” he said.
