The Central Bureau of Investigation conducted searches at the residential premises of accused persons in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Thanjavur and Kanniyakumari on Wednesday and seized ₹27 lakh, incriminating documents and devices.

The searches pertain to an investigation in an ongoing case against K. Pugalendi, Senior Deputy Director, Research, Traffic Department, Chennai Port Trust, and five others. It was alleged that the official had demanded and received ₹70 lakh bribe from a private firm to award a tender.

A prima facie offence of accepting the bribe in 2019-20 was established against Mr. Pugalendi in an inquiry conducted by the Vigilance Department of the Chennai Port Trust. It was alleged that some outsiders and other government agencies were also involved.

The CBI conducted a preliminary investigation and registered a case against six persons, including representatives of R.S. Enterprises, Chennai.
