by · The Hindu

The Telangana Fisheries department is working on a proposal to establish a recreational fishing spot with an outlay of ₹2 crore at Shamirpet lake, a popular hangout location for people in and around Hyderabad. It would be a first-of-its-kind facility near the city limits.

According to sources, a decision to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project was taken at a coordination meeting held by Sabyasachi Ghosh, Special Chief Secretary of the Animal Husbandry and Fisheries department, in Hyderabad on Thursday (December 12).

It was also decided to submit a revised proposal for Centre of Excellence for Murrel at Yellampalli reservoir in Mancherial, with an outlay of ₹25 crore under PMMSY-Central Sector Scheme 2024-25.

To promote fish consumption and encourage value-added products, a ‘Fish Festival 2025’ on Necklace Road in February or March 2025 has also been proposed. It would be organised by the Fisheries department and National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB).

Bijay Kumar Behera, chief executive of NFDB; P. Nehru, executive director of NFDB; and government officials were present at the meeting.
