Amazon launches new projects to improve water conservation
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduAmazon recently announced its goal to “return more water to communities in India” than it uses in its direct operations by 2027. Through the recently launched projects in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, it aims to improve water conservation efforts at fulfilment centres, corporate offices, and data centres across the country.
Projects will be concentrated in areas of the highest water stress and their surrounding local communities.
The projects have been launched in Yamare Lake near Bengaluru and Sai Reddy Lake near Hyderabad to mitigate local water challenges and support community resilience.
Yamare and Sai Reddy Lakes, once vital water sources for their communities, have been gradually vanishing due to sediment buildup and vegetation overgrowth resulting from urbanisation and erosion. “The diminished water storage capacity of the lakes has also led to increased flooding risks and reduced groundwater recharge, further straining local water resources,” said a release on the projects.
Amazon will partner with SayTrees, a local environmental organisation, to undertake a comprehensive restoration of Yamare and Sai Reddy Lakes. The projects, set to commence in January, 2025, will involve desilting the lakes, restoring bund formations, and repairing inlet and outlet structures. These efforts are expected to increase the water volume capture potential of Yamare Lake and Sai Reddy Lake by more than 571 million litres combined.
“These lake restoration projects serve as a great model for how businesses can positively impact both environmental sustainability and community well-being,” said Deokant Payasi, Trustee with SayTrees.
