Mapped - the 21 huge wind turbines coming to Greater Manchester

The exact location of the new turbines at what would be ‘England’s largest onshore wind farm’ at Scour Moor II has been revealed.

An interactive map shows the majority of the 21 new wind turbines would be built on the eastern side of the moorlands. The site sits between Rochdale, Edenfield and Rawtenstall and is expected to become the largest onshore wind farm in England.

Located next to the existing Scout Moor wind farm, this project would see the total number of turbines on Scout Moor increased to 47.

It marks the first major onshore wind development in England since the original plans were shelved a decade ago. A backlash against onshore wind farms 10 years ago prompted the Conservative government to bring in new planning rules that effectively ruled out new developments.

Cubico Sustainable Investments, which is behind the latest project, believe it could be operational before 2030 and could generate an estimated £200 million of investment and hundreds of skilled green jobs.

Subject to planning permission, Scout Moor II could generate enough clean electricity to power over 100,000 homes and meet around 10 per cent of Greater Manchester’s domestic energy needs. The site was identified as one of the best potential locations for wind energy generation in England, helping to reduce the UK’s reliance on fuel imports, according to Cubico.

The developer has admitted there could be traffic problems during construction, but said once it was built disruption would be minimal with only maintenance visits required occasionally. Cubico said they will prepare an Abnormal Load Assessment to outline how our turbine parts will be delivered with minimal local disruption.
