British Gas customers can get half-price electricity over Christmas - but they must act before Sunday.

Britain's biggest energy supplier is offering households the chance to slash their bills on Christmas Day and Boxing Day this year by signing up to its PeakSave scheme. Customers on the scheme can earn credit back on their energy bills by shifting their electricity use to times when there is less demand.

Households who sign up to the scheme before Sunday, December 15, will be able to take advantage of half price electricity between 11am and 4pm for two days over the festive period.

PeakSavers will be allowed to use as much electricity as they need from 11am to 4pm on December 25 and 26 and only pay half the price. Customers also get half-price electricity every Sunday throughout December as part of the PeakSave scheme.

British Gas said households can save money on their energy bills by doing more energy-intensive tasks during a session, such as running the washing machine or using the oven.

Catherine O’Kelly, managing director of British Gas Energy, said: "This festive season we wanted to give back to our customers once again. We know that so many of them appreciated the half price days last Christmas whilst they were spending more time at home with loved ones.

"It’s no surprise that our PeakSave scheme has been a huge success – it helps customers save on their energy costs while also contributing to a greener grid. We’re expecting that to continue throughout the winter and look forward to welcoming even more customers to PeakSave.”

British Gas customers can sign up to PeakSave no matter what tariff they are on. However, they must have an electric smart meter that automatically sends meter readings.

British Gas says it has so far paid over £16 million to more than 690,000 customers taking part in the PeakSave scheme. You can sign up on the British Gas website here.
