Call to boost flexible working in childcare sector to tackle staff shortages
The Timewise study said levels of part-time work across the early education and childcare sector have fallen over the past few years
by Lawrence Matheson, Alan Jones PA Industrial Correspondent · The MirrorCampaigners are pushing for more flexible and part-time roles in childcare to address staff shortages.
Timewise's research indicates a decline in part-time positions within the early education and childcare sector, posing challenges for those needing to juggle work with personal caregiving duties. The study highlights that early years workers often clock in longer hours compared to those in similar jobs like retail or hospitality.
Timewise, an advocate for flexible working arrangements, has noted that recruitment difficulties are leading to a "recruitment and retention crisis" in the sector.
Clare McNeil, Timewise's director of policy, commented: "Even in time and resource-constrained nurseries, we have shown it is possible to create flexibility for staff which boosts morale and wellbeing. It is clear we need to increase part-time and flexible work to make the sector more competitive and to meet the staffing shortfall for the new entitlement."
McNeil also called for a new workforce strategy centred on flexible working to attract more individuals into the early years profession and ensure they receive the recognition and conditions they deserve.
