Half of people people visited places which did not accept or discouraged cash
The survey forms part of ATM and cash access network Link’s research to understand how and where people are using cash
by Lawrence Matheson, Vicky Shaw PA Personal Finance Correspondent · The MirrorA recent survey has found that half of the population has visited a location that either refused to accept cash or discouraged its use.
The research, conducted by Link, aimed to understand the usage of cash among the public. According to the YouGov survey of over 2,100 individuals across the UK in November, parking facilities were the most common places that did not accept or discouraged cash.
Cafes, restaurants, public transport, and pubs also featured on the list. In contrast, convenience stores were the most popular places where people used cash, followed by supermarkets and giving money to friends and family.
Nearly three-quarters of respondents reported using cash in the two weeks preceding the survey. Graham Mott, Link's director of strategy, stated: "While more people are choosing to use digital payments, cash remains resilient and people like using cash and certainly like having the choice to use it if they want."
