ESB Networks has said that 4,000 customers are still without power as a result of Storm Darragh.

The key areas impacted are Carrick-on-Shannon in Co Leitrim, Tullamore in Co Offaly, and Arklow in Co Wicklow, as well as parts of Co Cavan.

A spokesperson for the ESB said that the numbers affected came down from 8,000 yesterday, and that this would continue for the rest of the week.

The ESB representative added that it could be Friday before the issues are resolved, as a result of one of the biggest outages ever recorded.

"The timeline remains the same, in that the vast majority of customers will have their power back by Friday," the spokesperson said.

"There will be pockets out until Friday. We know how tough it is to be without power for this long and we are putting all available resources in place to resolve this."

Up to 3,000 technicians are still working on the issue across the country.

With regard to safety, ESB Networks recommended that if anyone comes across a fallen wire, to assume that it is live and not to touch it but to report it to the ESB.
