Kildare County Council has appointed a main contractor to construct a new pedestrian footbridge for the Barrow Blueway scheme.

The location of the bridge is near Spencer Bridge at Mullantine near the R414 Rathangan to Monasterevin road.

The structure, which has an estimated construction value of €1.5m, will include reinforced concrete foundations, abutments and piers, a steel footbridge superstructure and reinforced soil approach ramps.

Kenny Civils & Plant Limited from Co Galway has been appointed as the main contractor.

This 46km Barrow Blueway route is running along the Grand Canal Barrow Line from Lowtown near Robertstown to Athy.

The project, which will also pass into Co Laois and Co Carlow, aims to create jobs and new economic activity in the towns and villages along the route.

Kildare County Council has received €3.9m to complete the scheme under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund.
