British Gas, Octopus, Eon, EDF and OVO customers urged to claim before deadline

Low-income households could be able to save on their energy bills through a special Government grant. But it's thought many people who may be eligible are unaware the support is available.

The Home Upgrade Grant helps provide crucial upgrades to colder homes, making them warmer and cutting the amount of time residents have to use their heating, helping to keep bills down. Some of the poorest families also live in homes with some of the worst conditions.

They have to keep their heating on longer so they stay warm, as heat escapes from poorly-insulated properties easily through windows, doors, walls and ceilings. People are being told they have until the end of January to apply.

To be eligible, residents must own their home, have a combined annual income of under £36,000, and an energy performance certificate (EPC) between D and G. Homes in the poorest conditions will have lower energy ratings.

Solihull Council is among local authorities sending reminders to residents. Housing boss Councillor Mark Parker, said: "This scheme is a win-win for Solihull and residents, helping to decarbonise our homes in the borough, whilst ensuring residents are keeping warm at home and saving money on their energy bills with upgrades that come at no cost to them.

“The deadline for HUG2 is fast approaching, so we encourage residents to get their applications in quick. For those who are not eligible or miss the cut-off, there are a number of other energy efficiency grants schemes available so it is worth checking our website to see if you could apply.”
