One-off payments from DWP worth £300 entering bank accounts

by · Birmingham Live

Special one-off payments from the Government have started entering bank accounts. The Winter Fuel Payment is worth up to £300 and is paid out to pensioners on the lowest incomes.

The money will go to those who get Pension Credit and certain other benefits. In previous years, it was paid out to all pensioners but changes made by the Government mean it will now only go to the poorest.

Older people who remain eligible should notice the payments entering their accounts over the coming weeks if it has not arrived already. The Government says the money is usually paid out between mid-November and Christmas so some may be waiting a little longer than others.

Those between retirement age and 80 will get £200, while those over 80 will get the higher amount of £300 in recognition they are likely to spend more time at home and will have higher energy costs. There has been huge controversy over Winter Fuel Payments this year after the new Labour Government massively stripped them back.

Around 10 million pensioners will no longer get them. While that includes those who are comfortable enough to cope without them, it also includes an estimated two million on low incomes.

As well as the Winter Fuel Payment, the DWP's Christmas Bonus is also on the way in the next few weeks for pensioners and those on certain benefits. It's a £10 payment designed to give a small boost to those on low incomes over the busy festive period. The cash should enter bank accounts of those eligible just before Christmas.
