British Gas, OVO, EDF, EON and Octopus customers have been told to only use their tumble dryers at NIGHT if they are to save cash on energy bills. British Gas, OVO, EDF, Eon and Octopus bills will rise a staggering £149 to £1771 next week, on October 1.

Money-saving experts at Savoo, a voucher code provider that donates to charity with every voucher used, have put together a list of their top tips on how to save money on your energy bills ahead of the new cap kicking in as a result of the move from Ofgem.

Ed Flemming, Savoo’s managing director and energy-saving expert shares his top tips for saving money on your bills. He said: "Don’t stick with your current supplier - Just because it’s easy, when your tariff is up for renewal shop around and even use discount codes to save further.

"Do energy-intensive tasks when costs are lower- Using the drier at night can help you save money with the cost of energy dropping due to less demand. Wash clothes at 20°C - This is an average of 62% cheaper than if you wash at 40°C!

"Install a programmable smart home heating system - This helps to keep a close eye on your heating and hot water usage, and therefore costs too. Consider adding insulation to your loft, walls and floors - This will help to maintain a consistent temperature for heating savings long-term."

From next week, sunset will be around 7pm - so households should only really be using dryers after that point. Savoo’s Senior Media Buyer Charlotte Amadis says, ‘List your financial goals in order of priorities, with a mixture of short- and long-term targets. Set up a recurring transfer at the start of every month to your savings account so you can budget around your savings.

‘Automating the process also makes saving much more effortless than constantly thinking about it, which you can do via a monthly standing order. Make sure you keep track of your goals and whether the specific amount you save each month is in line with your goals.’
