One of Derbyshire's most festive pubs just 'keeps getting better and better'

This Derbyshire pub has tried every year to go bigger and better with their decorations and Christmas spirit. The pub has even produced a short film to help cheer up the local community as the big day approaches.

The Chequers Inn, in Breaston, has spent hundreds on their decorations and this year they even produced a seven minute long feature film with people's favourite Christmas characters like the Grinch. The pub boasts that they go "above and beyond" in order to help bring some Christmas cheer to those who struggle at home.

Luke Simpson, 27, one of four landlords at the Erewash pub said:"In terms of the Christmas spirit we've been doing this for about 10 and a half years. It started off small and gradually over the years we have added to it. It's just got to this stage where we are just getting bigger and bigger, better and better.

"We have to keep coming up with ideas of how we can outdo ourselves from the previous year really. It is becoming increasingly difficult to get better and better.

"We've had such a positive response from the community about the lights and the film we put on our Facebook. We do these things to make ourselves a little bit silly but then the local community really gets behind us and everyone has a laugh, we just want to raise everyone's spirits a little bit in the lead up to Christmas."

As a result of 10 years of accumulating Christmas decorations, there is now over 30,000 lights that cover the exterior and the interior of the small village pub.

Luke continued: "To get the perfect shot of the exterior pub we accidentally ran our drone into a tree but it was well worth it to get that shot of the outside of the pub. In terms of cost it's anywhere from £500 to £1000 a year and some years it's more. In terms of lights it takes a lot to put them up everywhere.

"We have quite a few local schools that are near our pub so when they finish school we can see their smiles from inside when they look at the decorations. Everybody says how great it looks, our goal really is just to give the locals a pub that they can be proud of. We want them to know that we appreciate their custom and want them to see we make an effort."

If you would like to watch the seven minute long Christmas short film, then the video is available on the Chequers Inn Facebook page with all of the video being shot in and around the popular pub.
