Ofgem said tens of thousands of consumers have called for standing charges to be axed altogether, but those who use a lot of energy - often for medical and health reasons - would see their bills rise significantly

The energy regulator has announced that suppliers must offer "zero standing charge" tariffs by next winter, alongside their existing rates.
