Colder weather and dark nights have certainly never kept Geordies in the house and these archive photos taken around October 2008 show crowds embracing the autumn chill and enjoying themselves on the town.

And there are some typical coat-less scenes among them as lads and lasses dressed to impress on a big night out. They were snapped by Chronicle photographers for the paper's regular Bigg Night Out series which ran from 1992 until 2012.

The photos, as usual, are focused around Newcastle city centre and the Bigg Market area and viewers will also spot Pudding Chare, in images taken just outside the old Fleet Street pub. While that closed down several years ago, the popular party bar's name was revived this summer when a new Fleet Street opened on the site.

To set the wider scene for the time, the charts in October 2008 were dominated by Kings of Leon - with their hit single Sex on Fire and popular album Only by the Night - as well as by P!nk's single So What; Oasis album Dig Out Your Soul and Keane's Perfect Symmetry. At the cinema, the likes of How to Lose Friends & Alienate People and High School Musical 3: Senior Year were among the films most watched.
